If you are obese or severely obese, and have struggled to lose weight and keep it off, you might feel like you are out of options. You know that you have to lose weight to feel better, and prevent joint pain, diabetes, and heart disease, among many other comorbidities. You may have considered weight loss surgery, but you don’t know which procedure would be best – Lap Band vs. gastric sleeve, or another procedure? Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S. and his team at Dr. Feiz & Associates are here to help you through your whole weight loss journey.
For Dr. Feiz, the first step is to educate patients who may not know the difference between sleeve gastrectomy and Lap Band procedures. These are both procedures that keep most of the digestive system intact – unlike gastric bypass, for example – and the health benefits of maintaining that system have made both of these procedures very popular. The Lap Band involves a medical device that is somewhat like a rubber band, which is wrapped around the stomach to create an hourglass shape. This allows a smaller portion of the stomach to fill with food, helping the patient feel full after eating less. The gastric sleeve is much the same, except 75% of the stomach is removed to create a permanently smaller “sleeve.” Both procedures are effective, but each body reacts differently. Dr. Feiz will also discuss the possibility of sleeve gastrectomy after Lap Band, for patients who may want to or need to move to a permanent solution later.
