As a renowned, bariatric surgeon, it should come as no surprise that Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S. is often called upon to explain and answer questions regarding the differences between Lap Band vs. sleeve gastrectomy. Dr. Feiz is an active member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, and he has performed countless bariatric treatments, including Lap Band, sleeve gastrectomy and even Lap Band revision surgery.

Lap Band is a minimally invasive bariatric surgery that involves the expert surgeon placing an expandable and retractable band around the stomach, allowing only so much food to pass through at any given time. This leads to safe, sustainable and rapid weight loss, without the loss of energy or feelings of discomfort that are common among those who attempt dieting. This is similar to sleeve gastrectomy, however, unlike Lap Band, sleeve gastrectomy is a permanent treatment.

In Lap Band to sleeve gastrectomy, Dr. Feiz will undo a Lap Band that leads to less than satisfying results, or unintended complications. He will then use his precise expertise to perform a sleeve gastrectomy, which involves removing 85% of the stomach, until it is a slender shape that can only allow so much food to pass through.

The choice of whether to undergo Lap Band surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, or another bariatric treatment is different for every individual. However, the medical experts at Dr. Feiz and Associates will happily consult with each patient to decide which treatment is ideal for each particular person's medical needs.
